Catlins Wildlife Trackers
Ecotours

Accommodation, tracks and walks
in the Catlins.

Fergus and Mary Sutherland.

We live in the Catlins (New Zealand) and run natural history/wildlife ecotours, two day walks, conservation work opportunities as well as offering accommodation options. Our ecotourism trips emphasise learning about and seeing nature with us. We have won awards for our tours including the NZ Ecotourism award in 1993 and the NZ Activity and Adventure Tourism Awards in 1996. We have three children: two daughters (one son in law) and a son, also a dachshund named Cloudberry. We live in a house we built ourselves overlooking the sea and forest. We have self-catering cottage or homestay accommodation available for those who do not want a tour.

1. Ecotours in the Catlins

*Our tours are for two or four days

*Our guests stay with us in our home

*Our groups are small

*We operate to an environmental code

Our tours start from Balclutha (on the road between Dunedin and Invercargill), or visitors may drive themselves to our place. Accommodation is at our home at Papatowai in the heart of the Catlins, on the coast with an elevated and uninterrupted view over a natural scene of native forest, river estuary, beach and ocean. This is one of New Zealand's outstanding forest and marine wildlife areas and our ecotours are highly rated. (NZ Ecotourism Award co-winners 1993, Activity and Adventure winners 1996.) We take groups of up to 8 people by mini bus to remote places to walk and appreciate the flora and fauna, geology, history and conservation. Rare wildlife seen includes Hooker's sealions and yellow eyed penguins and at times yellow head, fernbird, Hector's dolphins and elephant seals.

CONSERVATION CONTRIBUTION

You will be contributing to conservation of wildlife on every tour. We make wildlife observations, trap non-native predators and remove weeds. The work break programme involves specific projects for penguins, plant and history conservation as well as educational workshops. We work to a code of sustainable environmental practice and are part-time Department of Conservation rangers We are sensitive to the cultural environment that we live in.

QUOTES FROM WRITERS

To walk with the Sutherlands along these lonely beaches is akin to taking a guided tour of a renaissance cathedral; but here the treasures are the fossils, the middens left by Maori communities, the yellow eyed penguins, the ancient podocarp forests full of rimu, totara, matai and rata and the kingfishers, tuis and bellbirds."
Cate Brett, NORTH AND SOUTH January 1994.

"With their backgrounds as teachers and conservationaists, and their infectious enthusiasm for the region, the Sutherlands make perfect guides."
Lawrence Hertzog, 'Moving with Care through the Catlins' PACIFIC WAY June 1995.

"One highly recommended operation ... is Catlins Wildlife Trackers. They offer a 'total' unified eco-experience. The natural history, landforms and geology are interwoven with recent history; the secrets of the sea, littoral, rainforest, wetlands and sky are all gathered together, dissected and meticulously explained; and natures rare and timid creatures are revealed."
Jeff Williams in The LONELY PLANET Guide to New Zealand 1994 edition.

"If an afternoon's aquaintance is a guide, time spent with the Sutherlands could not fail to educate and delight. Their enthusiasm is palpable."
John Gardner, travel writer NEW ZEALAND HERALD March 9, 1993.

"Dedicated conservationists, the Sutherlands take visitors to observe Hooker's sealions and penguins and gently teach their guests about ecology, geology and conservation."
Peter Owens in NEW ZEALAND RECREATIONAL ASSOCIATION Magazine Autumn, 1995.

"...a benchmark of excellence for ecotourism operators ... demonstrating a practical commitment to conservation and noted for the excellent small group experience they give to visitors - guaranteeing maximum enjoyment and an educational experience.
Judge's comments, NEW ZEALAND ECOTOURISM AWARDS, 1993.

"...an excellent example of people who have taken the Otago Regional Council's substantial resource management message personally on board..."
Louise Rosson, Chairwoman of Otago Regional Council on presenting The OTAGO REGIONAL COUNCIL'S 1993 Environmental Award.

2. Two Day Walks in the Catlins

We offer two varied walks from Papatowai:

"BEECH to BEACH" (guided) & "TOP TRACK" (self guided)

Beech To Beach Walk

The Beech to Beach walk is a two day 30km guided walk through protected beech forest and over private land which provides a variety of great views, historic features and rare wildlife. After a briefing at Papatowai you are transported through the scenic Owaka Valley to the inland beech forest where the walk begins. While walking down the Catlins River Valley through native beech forest, you have opportunities to see rare native birds such as yellowhead (mohua) and parakeet (kakariki). The overnight accommodation is the wonderful old Mohua Lodge. Tranquil in its forest setting, Mohua Lodge provides comfortable accommodation and great food.

The second days walk follows the spectacular old rail route over a saddle and down the Maclennan Valley past picturesque wateralls, forest and farmland. The end of the walk is reached at Papatowai where your accommodation is with us in our house overlooking Tahakopa Bay.

This walk is for those of moderate fitness - light packs only are needed as overnight requirements will be carried to Mohua Lodge. Vehicles may be left at Papatowai, contact us for other transport information.

A maximum of eight walkers are accompanied by a guide and are supplied with all food requirements.

The time for the walk is from 9 am Thursday to 9 am Saturday, every week from November to March.

Top Track Walk

The Top Track is a two day 26km walk over private land which provides a variety of stunning vistas. It begins at Papatowai with remote beach walking, continues along the stunning cliff-tops and through farmland to the overnight accommodation - Top Bus!

Top Bus is a restored trolly bus and is supplied with basic facilities such as mattresses and pillows, pots, cutlery and dishes. There is a water supply, gas cooker and a "loo with a view". There is accommodation for six people in two double bunks and one double bed.

The second day leads walkers through forest and some of the highest farmland in the area which offers views into the central core of the Catlins. The route then follows the route of the historic Catlins railway down to the lovely bush-lined Maclennan River. The walkers then return to the starting point, Papatowai.

Walkers are given a detailed booklet describing the route and interesting features along the way, they take their own food and sleeping bag. It is possible to do the walk in one day of about 10 hours.
